Care of Books: All books given to the students must be covered. The cost of books is extremely high and we ask your assistance in instructing the children to take good care of these books. Children will be expected to pay for lost or damaged books at the end of the school year. Books must be carried in a schoolbag or backpack. For safety reason, NO WHEELS ON BACKPACKS ARE PERMITTED.
Homework is given to reinforce the learning process and to meet individual needs. For a child to benefit from the work assigned and to develop good study habits, a definite period of time and a quiet place should be provided. Students who are absent from school must make an effort to make up the assigned work. Any student in grades 5-8 who misses homework 3 times will receive detention.
Discipline in a Catholic School is an aspect of moral guidance. Its purpose is to develop the individual as a human person who respects himself/herself and others and therefore increases respect for duly constituted authority.
Detention is the penalty for not observing the Code of Living at St. Fidelis.
Detentions will be given for conduct that is inappropriate. Some examples are endangering the safety of others, disorderliness, disrupting class, and improper attire. Fighting, yelling, profanity or any type of disruptive conduct is prohibited. Other offenses include recurring tardiness, disrespect, defiance, dishonesty, cheating, stealing, missing detention, and defacing property. The hallways and stairwells are an extension of the classroom.
Detention will be held one afternoon a week on Wednesdays. Students will stay after school with a teacher from dismissal until 3:30 PM in a classroom setting. Parents will be notified a day or more in advance if their child is required to serve detention.
It is our wish that detention will be a deterrent for any future behavioral problems. It is up to the teacher’s discretion to deem what is serious enough to warrant detention.
**After 3 detentions, a student may receive an in-school suspension.
Lateness:
Students who arrive after the bell rings are considered late. Lateness causes a disruption in the daily schedule for the student, the teacher, and the entire class. It is important that students be on time. This is mandated by the Board of Education, City of NY. Therefore, any student who is late three times will be required to serve detention.
