Weekly Synopsis
SOCIAL STUDIES- Your child is about to begin studying major events that occurred before, during, and after the Civil War. In the sixth unit, Civil War Times, these are some of the topics that will be covered:
- how regional differences caused conflict between the North and South
- the actions taken by some Americans to try to end slavery
- the effects of Lincoln's victory in 1860 election
- the Civil War and Reconstruction
-the settlement of the West
- how industries and inventions changed life in the United States during the late 1800s
-opportunities and challenges faced by immigrants
ELA
This week the class will be focusing on grammar and writing. The students will practice their essay writing skills such as an introduction and conclusion. They will also study fiction. During Reading we will be reading The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The class will be talking about flashbacks, imagery, personification, hyperboles, and other literary devices the author uses to help the reader understand the text.
